Hellboy’s Mike Mignola Worked on a Canceled Thor Animated Series

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is the subject of an upcoming documentary called Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters. While the documentary itself is focused on Mignola’s prolific comics career, a newly revealed bonus feature will shed light on a fascinating animated project that never saw the light of day.

It turns out Mignola worked on a Thor animated series in the late ’90s. Not Marvel’s Thor, but a series based directly on Norse mythology. This canceled project will be the subject of one of the many bonus features on the Drawing Monsters Blu-ray.

Check out the slideshow gallery below for an exclusive look at some of Mignola’s character designs for the animated series:

“In the late 90’s/early 2000’s, Mike Mignola worked on designs for a never produced Thor cartoon. Not Marvel’s Thor, but one based directly on Norse mythology,” said filmmaker Kevin Konrad Hanna. “One of the people helping put the show together was animation writer Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) who also has kept an archive of over two dozen never-before-seen Mike Mignola illustrations.”

“The set of illustrations is truly incredible and we’re very so excited to share them that we are adding ANOTHER Special Feature exclusively to the 2-Disc Blu-Ray set for Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters,” said producer Jim Demonakos. “Henry himself will be narrating the story of how the cartoon came together along with revealing all of the images. For the rest of March, you can still pre-purchase the Blu-Ray of the film that includes this and many more special features, plus you can get your name in the credits of the film as well!”

Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is currently undergoing a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, with options for both a digital copy of the documentary and a two-disc Blu-ray edition. The campaign will run through the end of March 2022.

Even though the core Hellboy/BPRD saga ended in 2019, Mignola continues to focus on a number of other horror comics. Recently, Mignola teamed with Warwick Hohnson-Cadwell on the original graphic novel Falconspeare.
