Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy Reveal How the Lightsaber And Captain America’s Shield Made It Into Free Guy

It’s no secret Free Guy is packed full of Easter eggs – a video game movie that revels in nerdiness was always going to be stuffed with pop culture references. But how on Earth did they get permission to use a lightsaber and Cap’s Shield?

During an interview with Variety, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy explain how it came to be… sort of.

“We wrote a letter to Disney: ‘Dear Disney, this is Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds, could we use a lightsaber, or Cap’s shield or Hulk’s fist?’ I recollect that they said yes to all of them,” said Levy. “Ryan recollected that maybe they said pick one or two? And we just decided to use all of them.”

The franchise-hopping potential in this movie is almost limitless. After all, Levy has already revealed that he wants to put Ryan Reynolds in Minecraft for the eventual sequel, which is already on the cards, according to Reynolds. Then there’s the film’s many, many, many cameos.

But it seems the pair got lucky when it comes to Disney’s copyrights.

“This is where it did get borderline lawless,” admitted Reynolds. “I said, ‘I think this is the perfect opportunity to ask for forgiveness.’ I interpreted this as using all of them. I do regret that we didn’t do something with Thor’s hammer.”

Thankfully, Disney loved the movie. A good thing really – Free Guy was now owned by the studio anyway.

“At that point, they had already made a tiny little purchase of Fox Studios, so we were technically a Disney movie anyway,” said Reynolds.

Interestingly, the moment with Cap’s shield was a rather dull affair on set – the shield itself was made of cardboard and painted grey, with the iconic color scheme added later using VFX… all to keep its addition a secret.

The end result is that Free Guy got away with some pretty epic moments.

And with Shawn Levy now directing Deadpool 3, it looks as though we can expect a lot more fourth-wall-shattering fun from the pair in the near future.

Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as video game NPC, Guy, alongside Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, and Joe Keery. Shawn Levy directed the film based on a script by Matt Liebermann and Zak Penn.
