New Riddler Year One Comic Written by The Batman’s Paul Dano Announced
Matt Reeves’ The Batman is getting another spinoff project, but this time in the form of a comic book exploring the origins of Paul Dano’s Riddler. Not only that, Dano is scripting the comic himself.
Riddler: Year One pairs Dano with artist Stevan Subic (Elric: The Dreaming City). This six-issue limited series will be published through DC’s mature readers-focused Black Label imprint.
Several Batman character have been given the Year One treatment over the decades, most famously in 1987’s Batman: Year One, by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, and 2003’s Batgirl: Year One, by Scott Beatty, Chuck Dixon and Marcos Martin. But whereas previous Year One tales have presented modernized origin stories set within DC’s core comic book universe, Riddler: Year One is specifically a prequel to The Batman.
DC’s press release reveals little about the plot of Riddler: Year One, teasing only, “This series explores the background of how accountant Edward Nashton went from a simple Gotham City nobody to becoming Batman’s nemesis, setting them on a collision course in the blockbuster feature film.”
Riddler: Year One will span six issues and will ship bimonthly beginning in October 2022.
WarnerMedia has so far confirmed two HBO Max series spinning out of The Batman. Colin Farrell will star in a Penguin series detailing Oswald Cobblepot’s rise to power after the events of the film. Meanwhile, the planned Gotham PD series has now “evolved” to become a show centered around the inmates of Arkham Asylum. It remains to be seen if a certain surprise character from The Batman will be appearing in that show.
